چکیده

The structure of the canine tapetum lucidum appears to be basically similar to that described in some other carnivores, but specific distinctions are present. The reflecting rodlets of the dog are similar in their dimensions to those of the cat, but they are more closely packed, resulting in a unique value for the wavelength of maximal reflectance. In addition, the rodlets are less precisely orientated, as compared to those of the cat, a condition which appears to result in a less efficient reflectance from the dog tapetum. It has also been shown that the dog does not possess a retinal tapetum lucidum, as had previously been suggested.

Comparative morphology of the tapetum lucidum (among selected species).

OBJECTIVES The phenomenon of 'eye-shine' is seen in a variety of animal species, and is generally thought to be related to the presence of an intraocular reflecting structure, the tapetum lucidum. The tapetum lucidum is a biologic reflector system that is a common feature in the eyes of vertebrates. It normally functions to provide the light-sensitive retinal cells with a second opportunity for...

Fine structure of the tapetum lucidum in the short-tailed stingray (Dasyatis brevicaudata).

The tapetum lucidum of the short-tailed stingray (Dasyatis brevicaudata) is located in the choroid of the superior fundus immediately external to the choriocapillaris. In this species the tapetum consists of a single layer of overlapping cells oriented at an angle of about 30 degrees to the incoming light. These tapetal cells alternate with and are separated from one another by melanocytes whic...

Electron Microscopy of the Tapetum Lucidum of the Cat

The fine structure of the tapetum of the cat eye has been investigated by electron microscopy. The tapetum is made up of modified choroidal cells, seen as polygonal plates grouped around penetrating blood vessels which terminate in the anastomosing capillary network of the choriocapillaris. The tapetal cells are rectangular in cross-section, set in regular brick-like rows, and attain a depth of...

Electron microscopic study of the occlusible tapetum lucidum of the southern fiddler ray (Trygonorhina fasciata).

The choroidally located tapetum lucidum of the southern fiddler ray (Trygonorhina fasciata) has been examined by light and electron microscopy in both light- and dark-adaptation. In this species, the tapetum consists of a single layer of overlapping cells oriented at an angle of about 30 degrees to the incoming light. These are situated immediately external to the choriocapillaris. These tapeta...

Characteristics of structures and lesions of the eye in laboratory animals used in toxicity studies

Histopathology of the eye is an essential part of ocular toxicity evaluation. There are structural variations of the eye among several laboratory animals commonly used in toxicity studies, and many cases of ocular lesions in these animals are related to anatomical and physiological characteristics of the eye. Since albino rats have no melanin in the eye, findings of the fundus can be observed c...
